My oldest daughter Daisy is becoming quite talented at repurposing items around our home. I had a denim skirt that I bought when I was hugely pregnant with LuLu, and after I got it home I realized the elastic waist was totally shot. A blessing for me at the time because my own waist was totally shot! LOL But after I delivered her and my waist began to shrink again, I didn’t really have any use for it, so I thought I would just pass it back to the thrift store, but Daisy quickly said “NOOO, I want to make something out of that!” So at that point I gave it to her and she put it in her closet where it sat for several months.
Fast forward to a few days ago. We were cleaning out our utility room/family closet and I came across the skirt again. I asked Daisy again if she wanted it and she said yes, so I told her she needed to do something with it SOON please! Soon turned out to be about 2 hours later and in about 30 minutes time she came up with this adorable dress for her little sister Ruthy!
I would have never in a million years thought to do that! The colorful fabric bands were already a part of the skirt, and if you’ll notice by clicking on the pics to make them larger…the straps are made from that worn out waistband. Daisy took something I was ready to junk and made it into something her sibling adores!
This brings me to a change I’ve seen in Daisy since she’s begun working with her hands to make wonderfully creative items. I think many teenagers now-a-days have an “it’s all about me” attitude. She began to show that as well, for a time, in her earlier teen years…none of us are perfect, but it is truly humbling as a mother to see my daughter purposefully think of others first. She could have easily made herself most anything out of it, but she CHOSE to bless a younger sibling instead. That speaks volumes to my heart, and shows me that she has her ears open to the Lord’s whisper. In turn she received a blessing in the end, through the smiles, hugs and thanks of Ruthy…and a hug from Mama too!
I could learn much from my daughter. Teenagers are amazing and beautiful creatures!

Wow she did a fabulous job!!!!! You are so right: Teenages are amazing and beautiful and very creative.
What an adorable dress!!! And what a great post…I enjoyed reading it. Yes, they do all seem to make a brief “stop” in the “it’s all about me” place in the teens…I praise God for His work in their lives and the gift we have of homeschooling…the teens in the world make an almost permanent, over-the-top-stop in the “it’s all about me” place. God is soooooo gracious. Now you have a piece of Proverbs 23:24, 25: “The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, and he who sires a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her rejoice who gave birth to you.” Your daughter showed a very wonderful character quality…PTL!!! And what a good “teacher” for her younger sister, in selflessness.
God Bless,
