This is an update to my previous post here

Could This Be Descrimination?

Looks like they have apologized! Thanks to all who participated in the email campaign!

On May 27, 2008 the following was sent by HSLDA on the behalf of home educators.

Frederick A. DeLuca, President
Subway Restaurant Headquarters
325 Bic Drive
Milford, CT 06461-3059

Dear Mr. DeLuca:

By way of introduction, I am the President of Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and we represent 83,000 member families nationwide. This letter is to draw attention to your “Every Sandwich Tells a Story Contest,” and the unfortunate fact that homeschoolers are not allowed to participate.

The rules clearly state: “Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted (emphasis added).”

It is extremely disappointing that Subway would choose to exclude the estimated 2 million homeschooled students.

We understand that the competition is focused on traditional public and private schools because the grand prize of $5,000 of athletic equipment is designed to be used by a traditional school and not an individual family. A potential homeschool winner, however, could simply donate the grand prize to a public or private school of their choice or to a homeschool sports league.

Homeschooling is a thriving educational option. All the available research shows that homeschoolers are excelling academically and socially. We do not deserve to be overlooked.

We hope that you will reconsider the rules of your competition and choose to amend them to include homeschoolers.

Sincerely,
J. Michael Smith
HSLDA President

On May 28, 2008 Subway responded with this:

To HSLDA:

We at SUBWAY restaurants place a high value on education, regardless of the setting, and have initiated a number of programs and promotions aimed at educating our youth in the areas of health and fitness.

We sincerely apologize to anyone who feels excluded by our current essay contest. Our intention was to provide an opportunity for traditional schools, many of which we know have trouble affording athletic equipment, to win equipment. Our intent was certainly not to exclude homeschooled children from the opportunity to win prizes and benefit from better access to fitness equipment.

To address the inadvertent limitation of our current contest and provide an opportunity for even more kids to improve their fitness, we will soon create an additional contest in which homeschooled students will be encouraged to participate. When the kids win, everyone wins!

So very glad they listened!

Essential oils are expensive but have so many wonderful uses! I thought I would share what sounds like a super easy recipe for making your own at home!

Originally Published HERE by Kristie Leong, M.D.

What do you need to make your own essential oil?

All you really need is a an oil, some dryed herbs, Vitamin E gel gaps, unbleached cheese cloth, and access to a slow cooker or hot pot. I would recommend olive oil because it can withstand the heating process used to make essential oils. Some people also use sweet almond or jojoba oils for this purpose. The Vitamin E gel caps will serve as a natural preservative for your essential oils.

Here’s how to make your own essential oil:

1. Mix 1/2 ounces of bulk herbs of your choice with 2 cups of oil.

2. Stir thoroughly.

3. Add the mixture to your slow cooker and allow it to heat on very low heat (around 140 degrees) for 5-7 hours.

4. Remove the mixture from the crockpot and strain with your unbleached cheese cloth.

5. Place the strained liquid into a clean Mason jar and label it appropriately with the type of essential oil and the date. Dating your essential oil is important since the shelf life is about 6-8 months.

6. Store in a cool, dark area.

The only thing this recipe doesn’t give is how many Vitamin E capsules or how much Vitamin E oil to use, so maybe a little online searching, and you can figure that out. If you know offhand, please leave a comment!

DISCLAIMER: Keep in mind these oils are for use on your skin only and are NOT for oral ingestion.

I can’t wait to try this myself!

Having lost my grandfather to a sudden cardiac arrest in late 1988, this topic has always been near and dear to my heart, and I’ve always tried to learn as much about it as I can for the health of myself and my family. The following site has some great general information, as well as some interesting information about something called a ICD implant.

Did you know that SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) usually occurs without any warning?

Did you know that, If an individual is not treated within 4 to 6 minutes from the onset of SCA, the results can be fatal?

Inside Cardiac Arrest, presented by St. Jude Medical, provides information about the risk factors, warning signs, and treatment of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The site offers two videos: Sudden Cardiac Arrest and The Human Heart. In the videos, a real doctor explains SCA and heart anatomy in simple, easy to understand language.

Are you at risk for SCA? Find out more at:

I think we missed Spring, and it’s Summer already! Today in the Ozarks is in the lower 90’s and hot, sticky, and muggy! :) I’ll take that over cold, windy, and icky though any day though!
Tomorrow the children and I are looking forward to going to a wedding shower for a godly young lady in our church. I’m sure it will be a wonderful time in the Lord! I just love showers of all kinds…babies, weddings, etc. They are always so much fun and encouraging!

There isn’t too much going on though in our neck of the woods, just enjoying a slow, calm day or rest before our busier day tomorrow. I did stop by my husband’s Aunt’s house though earlier to check on her. She’s always so sweet to talk to and lives just down the street, so that was a blessing as well. I hope you all are having just as wonderful of a day!

About a year ago I signed up for PayPerPost, and was a bit sad when my blog was declined. I had seen links for PayPerPost all over friend’s blogs and wondered what I was doing wrong. Over time I thought it was best anyway, as I didn’t want my blog to be “one big commercial” as my friend Janne put it so well.

After reading her blog post though about what to expect and how she enjoyed it. I decided to try again since I’d gotten an email that they had changed the qualifications a little bit, and I got approved this morning!

I’m looking over the job opportunities right now, and again as my friend Janne said it’s not what I expected. There are many to choose from, and the opportunities are just that, YOUR choice as the blogger and blog owner, and you don’t have to say exactly what they tell you to. There are guidelines, but no written script or anything like that. You can pick products or other various things that you have used, tried, etc and write about your own personal, honest experiences.

Anything I blog about , as always, will be my honest opinion as I see it. Sponsored posts are always clearly marked as well for your reassurance, but again even if they are sponsored, it will be my opinion, not someone else’s. :0)

So if this sounds like something you are interested in, and you blog anyway, why not try it out! It’s 100% free to join!
