A Not So Average Christian Family - Living, Loving, And Learning Together
Apr 25

I read often on the Jeub Family Website and came across this today in which readers were asked to copy and paste and spread the word, so for your reading pleasure…………

As Wendy and I prepare for another presentation of “Cheaper by the Baker’s Dozen,” we are tempted to rename the presentation “Hurry Up and Stock Up the Pantry.” News item after news item is validating what we have been saying ever since oil began its rapid increase of prices. Add the minimum wage increase, growing demand in Asia, and government environmental policies for biofuels, you’ve got a recipe for expensive food!

The Wall Street Journal came out with an incredibly persuasive article on stocking up the pantry. Columnist Brett Arends lists the reasons with logical analysis in his article “Load up the pantry“:

  • Food is a global economy, so economic food prices in Asia does effect us in America.
  • Inflation in 2007: Flour up 13%; dairy up 10%; eggs up 30%; poultry up 5.4%. Compare that to the average money market fund (2.5%).
  • Food companies are no longer absorbing costs for raw materials (e.g. wheat has tripled in three years).
  • There aren’t “starving children in China” anymore, as a rising middle class is demanding more food (same in India).

Now, I just want to note that I was NOT one of those alarmists freaking out about Y2K. Back then I thought the claims of food shortages and riots were greatly inflated. You remember, computers would all collapse and ships would stop shipping food and chaos would consume. I remember thinking, “If that happens, I’m going hunting,” and I let others stock up on food and candle wax.

Also note, however, that the Y2K fears were not based on economics: they were based on technological opinions that no one fully understood. As I claim in Cheaper by the Baker’s Dozen, “Economics is as sure as gravity.” You can always count on it to work out, for the better or for the worse.

What should you do? Our third Principle of Frugal Living listed in the presentation states, “Frugal living requires creative solutions to economic realities.” Notice we didn’t say “economic problems” or “catastrophes.” There is really no such thing. Economics is amoral and simply a “reality” that we must deal with. The ideas Wendy and I come up with are simply ways we have dealt with the reality for 17 years of our marriage raising 14 kids.

Wendy’s Love in the Kitchen cookbook has a section in it called “Stock your shelves.” No kidding: nearly the exact same title as today’s Wall Street Journal article. She explains how she frugally keeps a tight reign on our family budget and how you can too. It isn’t computer engineering; much of it is simply understanding the family economic unit. Really, the advice she gives is worth much more than the price of the cookbook.

I had an appointment yesterday and everything is still going great, so not much to report! I gained an ounce this month LOL, baby’s heart beat is 155-160, I’m measuring a couple of weeks ahead for dates (not unusual for me), and everything seems just fine! I go back in 5 weeks.

It seems to be a busy time of year for us, but it’s SPRING!! :cloud0 :praise It had been rainy the last week, but the last 2 days have been beautiful! My husband is anxiously awaiting the end of his first semester of nursing school. It’s been a great time of learning though with some fun thrown in here and there, but it’s time for a much needed break! He’s got just about a month left before Summer break.

I’m doing very well, but seem to be nesting quite early. I figure better to do it during my 2nd trimester than when I’m huge, tired, and hot in August! You can keep up with pregnancy updates at my pregnancy journal below:

The children are doing well for the most part! All still learning to find their places in our home. It’s so much fun to watch their personalities change as they grow. Sometimes they show a little “too much” personality LOL and we deal with that, but otherwise it’s exciting to watch them grow in the Lord.

This week I’ll be taking our oldest 3 children to another town for IOWA testing. That’s a standardized test required by our state for public school children as well as homeschooled children. We are blessed to only have to take the reading and math portions of the test though, which will take just 1 morning to finish, whereas other children must take a complete battery of tests taking 2-3 days. It’s something we have to do here though to legally homeschool, but I’m blessed, SO blessed to have our children home, so I’ll jump through this minor State Board Of Education required hoop. LOL For me it officially marks the “near” end of our very first homeschooling year…the first of many to come! It’s been a great time of learning in all areas!

I do have a few requests I’d like to share with my readers. My oldest daughter (age 13) is battling illness last night mostly and into today and could use your prayers for strength and healing along with wisdom for Jack and I as her parents and caregivers.

UPDATE 4/26: Our oldest daughter is doing well now! Seems it was just a virus!

Also , our youngest son (age 2) is believed to have some hearing issues, due possibly to fluid in his ears. We’re using another medication to see if that will clear up and he goes back to be checked the middle of this month. If the fluid is still present, we will have to prayerfully consider further treatment for this. Please pray for him as well and that this fluid is all that is causing his issues. He doesn’t feel badly with this issue…he’s 100% boy all the time, so that is a blessing!

Update 4/26: The fluid is gone and his hearing is 100% fine!

And lastly, please pray for the Lord’s continued provision to our family in every way! We have some personal needs at this time, but we’re keeping our eyes on the Lord while serving Him and our faith and trust lies in Jesus alone!

Thank you for reading our updates, and have a wonderfully blessed Sabbath!
